So you’re having a baby!  You’ve likely spent months getting the baby’s room ready, buying supplies, and thinking about names. You’ve probably seen the doctor a gazillion times and spent hours in a childbirth class mapping out your birthing plan.

But here’s a question:  Have you thought about what you will take to the hospital?  Any experienced mom will suggest you have a “Go Bag” ready at least a month ahead of time, and the items you place in your bag could mean the difference between a great experience and a stressful one. Here’s a helpful list of things to take and things to leave at home.

Do Take:

  • Car Seat.  Obviously, this is not gonna fit inside your bag, but you need to take it with you to the hospital. Check online reviews, and make sure you pick one that is sized for an infant. Then strap it into your car securely. If you’re unsure, your local fire department may offer car seat installation to residents for free. Make sure it’s installed at least a month before your due date. You don’t want to be fussing with it when labor starts, and hospitals will not let you take the baby home in a car without one.
  • Phone and Charger:  You may want to take lots of photos and probably a video or two, and you’ll want to call, text, or message everyone with updates.
  • Driver’s License and Insurance Card: This may seem like a no-brainer, but you will need these items for hospital admission.
  • Clothes:  Don’t over-pack, but do take a few items for your own comfort such as warm, comfy socks. (Hospitals are notoriously cold). Include loose-fitting clothes to wear after the baby is born, such as pajamas or loungewear that you can easily move and sleep in. You can also take your own labor and delivery gown. Hospital gowns are not known for being comfortable or attractive, and you want to feel good in all those photos you’ll be taking. A well-loved sleeping gown will do the trick, or there are online options from companies that specialize in delivery gowns. Don’t forget underwear, a nursing bra and nursing pads, slippers, toiletries, cosmetics, glasses or contact lenses, and something to wear home from the hospital.
  • Baby Clothes: Pack something cute and weather-appropriate for the baby to wear home. One outfit should be enough. Most hospitals will dress your baby in a diaper, onesie, and blankets while you’re there, but a backup onsie never hurts.

Don’t Bother With:

  • Food: Even if you have food allergies, the hospital can accommodate you.
  • Diapers: The hospital will provide diapers while you’re there and send extras home with you.
  • Dressy Clothes: It may be tempting, but you don’t need your nicest apparel for what is essentially a medical procedure. Cute and comfy is best.

Having a baby is one of the most wonderful and exciting events you will ever experience. Being prepared with a go-bag filled with essentials will help you to make beautiful memories while keeping you comfortable and your stress levels low.
