One of the important ABCs of safe sleep is putting your baby to sleep in a crib or on another hard surface. Here are a few tips to keep your crib a safe sleeping space for your precious baby:
- Make sure there are no gaps larger than two fingers between the sides of the crib and the mattress
- Follow crib, bassinet, or playard assembly instructions carefully to make sure every part is in the right place. Only use the provided mattress pad. Don’t add extra padding.
- Don’t use a crib that’s older than 10 years, broken, or modified. Broken slats or too-large gaps can pose a suffocation risk.
- Keep cords from blinds, curtains, and electronic devices such as baby monitors safely away from the crib.
- If someone gifted you with a crib or gave you a “hand-me-down,” make sure the crib has not been recalled by the manufacturer.
- Check all screws and hardware regularly, and tighten them if necessary.
- A bare crib is best: No bumper pads, soft bedding (blankets, fluffy comforters, pillows), or soft toys should be left with your sleeping baby.
